I haven't been sleeping well.
Granted, I shouldn't have watched the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street right before bed. Or maybe too many back-to-back episodes of True Blood do not bode well for peaceful slumber.
But I love monsters! I love scary movies!
I guess you could file this under the list of "Things you know better than doing but you do them anyway."
Like when you eat a funnel cake and run straight for the Spinny Swings at the fair. Or when you go to the mall "just to look" and not buy.
It does make us interesting creatures - humans - does it not? We know french fries are bad for us and yet we on occasion to indulge in a Triple Baconator with chili cheese fries. We know we should exercise but drink Diet Coke instead.
When writing my characters, I have a habit of wanting to make them too perfect. Wanting to make them too likable. But my heroine is wounded and I've found that indulging in her true nature and keeping her that way has made her more interesting to me, and hopefully to future readers.
I wrote yesterday! But it was with a pen and I didn't count my words and log into NaNo. Today, though, my friends, the ink goes into the computer and I'll continue writing about my not-perfect characters who keep doing things they shouldn't.
Until then, I'm going to get a bite to eat and start my day!
....How bad of an idea is it to eat a bowl of Halloween candy for breakfast?
How about you reader? Do you know better and do better or do you know better but do bad anyway?
For today,
Smile, Feel Good, Pass it On

Perfection is boring! I love a good flawed character! How's your NaNo coming?
Well if it makes you feel any better I had raviolli for breakfast. Yes from the Chef. I was hungry and that is all I had at the office. I said I was hungry, so I say go for the candy.
Halloween candy for breakfast is a great idea. I mean, you have to get rid of it to make room for the Thanksgiving goodies, right? It only makes sense.
And last night I had beer and muffins for dinner. Then some Taco Bell. Picture of health, that's me!
I like this post though. I'll have to make my MC do some more bad stuff.
SO true. My character has a really obvious physical weakness, and working through the emotional implications of that -- the fact that he knows he is "subpar" in his world, is what makes the whole story interesting. Everyone tells me they keep reading because of him. But it's so hard! You want everyone to be fabulous and happy!
I was talking to the little boy I babysit yesterday. We were discussing a dinosaur fight in which two T-Rexes were pitted against each other. I told him that maybe they could just agree not to fight and be friends. He stopped for a moment, thought about it, put his finger in his mouth, then shook his head. "No," he said, "They fight to the death."
Why do we find the tragic so interesting? He's four!
As for me -- distractions include but are not limited to:
- SLEEP -- to much of it makes me groggy, but I just love sleeping!
- Coffee -- helps with lack of or excess of aforementioned
- Trueblood -- and I'm glad you agree :)
And your breakfast sounds amazing, btw. Go ahead and eat your heart out. You only live once!
My strategy is to pretend to NOT know better. Denial is not just a river in Egypt, it's a way of life!
